For 2008 . . . Daily
Bible Reading
For the new year, we are encouraging
everyone to read a section of Scripture every day
throughout 2008. A reading schedule for the entire year is
available on a bookmark. By following the plan every
chapter will be read in twelve months.
The Whole Bible
For the Whole Church
For the Whole Year
On Sundays the Auditorium Class, taught by David Pharr,
will highlight things from the previous week’s reading.
Also there will be occasional questions in the bulletin
about the reading for the upcoming week.
Some already have a daily Bible reading habit. This is a
habit all should develop. This includes our youth. They
will need the encouragement and example of adults.
Sometimes it’s hard to stay on schedule. If you get
behind, set a time for catching up.
Yes, some sections are more difficult than others, and
some will seem boring, but everything in the Bible has
purpose and a connection with the overall story. While
some of the modern speech translations are not reliable
for some doctrinal issues, they can be good for reading
through the Old Testament.
Consider the difference it can make in this church family
if everyone reads through the Bible in 2008.
Bookmarks
The daily Bible reading bookmarks are on the foyer
tables. There is one for every adult and youth. Starting
January 1, the daily assignments will take you through the
Bible in 2008.

Sunday Night -- The
Place To Be!
I. What will you be doing tonight that will be more
important than the meeting of the church?
II. Would you be in favor of discontinuing Bible classes
for children and adults?
III. If we take a vote to quit midweek church meetings,
would your vote be consistent with your practice?
IV. Have you ever prayed that you want to do the best you
can to build up the church?
About the Back Seats
A few families have a need for sitting near the back,
but most others could move up a row or two. It would be
helpful if at least the last two pews in each section
could be left for late arriving visitors. Christians are
instructed to “edify one another” (I Thess.5:11). Anything
we can do to improve the worship should be every
individual’s purpose. (Another improvement would be
arriving for classes and worship on time.) Very Personal Questions
Decided Over Fifty Years Ago
Soon after I obeyed the gospel in the early fall of 1909, I
read of an old brother who had not missed “going to church”
a single Sunday in 41 years. That human-interest story
caused me to resolve and purpose in my heart that I would
never miss the worship on a single Lord’s day as long as I
lived, if possible to attend. The Lord has blessed me with
good health and I have missed only some 4 or 5 Sundays in
over fifty years – and then it was because of illness each
time.
Once I made that decision, the question has not come up as
to whether I would attend the church services except those
few times when I was unable to attend. In fact, I did not
decide last Lord’s day to go to services, nor the Sunday
before. That was decided over fifty years ago when I read of
a man who never missed a Sunday in 41 years.

Batesburg. He will speak on “Why I Am Not a Muslim.”
Stewart has done considerable study on the subject of
Islam.
Our preacher will be speaking Wednesday at the Augusta

Why? Why? Why?
Why is it important to attend the Wednesday preaching
series this summer? Yes, some have circumstances that make
it difficult, but we are encouraged to do the best we can.
The guest speakers will give us solid and interesting
lessons. Good Wednesday attendance will build the church;
it will encourage the speakers; it will strengthen our
faith. Please be with us and bring a friend.
We have asked our youth to sit together as a group on the
front on the side by the windows.

Look to your Heart
If you feel you have a value to give,
During these difficult times that you live,
Don’t surrender your spirit;
Because if you do,
You’ll forfeit contentment
Allotted to you.
Contentment comes, when you know at the start,
You’re enriching your Soul, as you give of the heart.
Somebody is waiting, for someone like you,
To brighten their day, through a kind deed or two.
It need cost you nothing, in dollars and cents
Yet think of the rare gift, you’ll humbly present.
And only God knows, the graces you’ll gain,
While a deep sense of giving, in you shall remain.

Children’s Drill
The Children’s Drill is at the beginning of the 6pm
service.
Parents who are keeping their children involved in the
Sunday night drill are much appreciated. Some of the boys
and girls are already baptized believers. They participate
in a good way. The younger ones are also enthusiastic. I
keep remembering Matthew 19:14.
NOTE: Because of the
vacation trips, we will not have the drill for a few
weeks.

Churches of Christ
The church of Christ is a non-denominational body of
Christians. We have no earthly headquarters. Our leader is
in Heaven at the right hand of God. We are not affiliated
with any organization such as the National Council of
Churches. Rather, each local congregation of the churches
of Christ looks to God and His word for guidance. We
believe the Bible to be the inspired word of God and that
it furnishes us completely for every spiritual need. We
stand for a return to New Testament faith and practice.
And we are confident that by believing and doing what New
Testament Christians did, we can be the same kind of
Christians they were. We know this is right before God. We
see no need, therefore, for denominational names, creeds
and organizations.
Jesus said that worship must be in spirit and in truth
(Jn. 4:24). Worship among churches of Christ follows the
Scriptural pattern.
When the Lord established the church, He organized it into
local autonomous congregations, with each taking care of
its own affairs. He made no provisions for a national or
international headquarters. In matters of faith all are to
be guided by the New Testament. In other decisions, each
congregation was to govern itself.
The work of the church Jesus built was to preach the
gospel, as well as edify its members and care for the
needy. Churches of Christ do not exist as political tools,
nor do they exist as recreation clubs. Their work is
spiritual, doing what God intended the church to do.
Remember, Jesus built His church. It is found in the New
Testament. We can be a part of it by letting the Bible be
our only guide.

How to be Happy
Here are some attitudes and actions, revealed in
scripture, which if applied in our hearts will result in
the by-product we call “happiness.”
“Serve the Lord with gladness. . .” (Ps 100:2)
“Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.” (Ps. 29:2)
“Pray without ceasing” (1 Thess. 5:17)
“And be ye hind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving
one another.” (Eph. 4:32)
“Bear one another’s burdens” (Gal. 6:1)
“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all,
especially to those who are of the household of faith.”
(Gal. 6:10)
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and
supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made
known to God.” (Phil. 4:6)
“I have learned in whatever state I am to be content.”
(Phil. 4:11)
“. . . Walk in the light as He is in the light . . .” (1
Jn. 1:7)
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
(Phil. 4:13)
True happiness comes when God’s will is being done in our
lives.

More Beautiful One-Liners
When praying, don’t give God instructions - just report
for duty.
Don’t wait for six strong men to take you to church.
We don’t change God’s message – His message changes us.
The church is prayer-conditioned.
When God ordains, He sustains.
WARNING: Exposure to the Son may prevent burning.
Plan ahead – It wasn’t raining when Noah built the ark.
Most people want to serve God, but only in an advisory
position.
Suffering from truth decay? Brush up on your Bible.
