Preacher Opening

Preacher Opening
Charlotte Avenue Church of Christ
Rock Hill, SC

Charlotte Avenue has an average attendance of just under 200. At present we have five elders and seven deacons. The congregation is biblically sound and has a harmonious membership. The facilities are excellent for worship, classes and fellowship. There are three other congregations in York County, all of which developed from the Charlotte Avenue congregation and close fellowship continues with each.
Other sections of our web site will provide other details about activities and doctrinal positions.
Rock Hill and York County are in the fastest growing area in South Carolina. York County is near the North Carolina border, just south of Charlotte, NC.

Opening:
Our present preacher anticipates retiring in early 2009. Salary and benefits for his replacement will be negotiated in view of experience and family. The church does not own a minister's residence. Applicant should understand that he will be subject to the eldership in all matters of employment and as a member of the congregation.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
This is to be considered only as a summary with the understanding that changes and adjustments may be necessary. Generally, the position will be as is typical among churches of Christ. It is assumed that the preacher will unselfishly and zealously participate in opportunities for the spread of the gospel. (We think it is important that there be a good understanding of what is expected, but as evidence of the good working relationship between the elders, congregation, and preacher please notice that the retiring minister will be completing over 10 years in his second tenure with the church. His first tenure was almost 25 years.)

  1. Prepare and deliver Bible based sermons each Sunday morning and evening. Topics to include a wide range of subjects--"the whole counsel of God." The minister will typically choose the topics he deems to be needed by the congregation. Suggestions will sometimes be made by the elders. The expectation will be that no topic will be out-of-bounds and sensitive issues will be preached on occasion. However, all lessons are to be delivered with love and compassion.
  2. Fulfill the role of a minister with respect to member and prospective member visitation, being attendant to the needs of the sick and the bereaved.
  3. Be available to the members for special occasions such as weddings and funerals.
  4. The minister will avail himself of opportunities to advance his Bible knowledge through classes, lectureships, reading, and writing for brotherhood magazines and journals where possible.
  5. Take an active role in the education and training of the congregation. This will include, but not be limited to, teaching classes on Sunday morning and Wednesday evening, working with the education committee to establish the training curriculum, assisting with youth programs, assisting with developing the annual VBS program, assisting with the annual Carolina Men's Day (lectureship) activities and assisting in the scheduling of various guest speakers for gospel meetings and other events.
  6. Advise and participate in evangelistic outreach to the community and help to coordinate the activities of the members in this regard.

Coordination & Integration of Activities/Functions:
The minister will be expected to work closely with the elders. This will include meeting with them on a regular basis (perhaps monthly). He will fully understand the Biblical requirement that the elders must shepherd the flock. He will be expected to support all decisions made by the elders before the congregation unless scripture can be shown indicating that such decisions are not in keeping with the Bible.
While at present we are not employing an associate minister, we would expect that in the eventuality of having an associate minister, there would be full cooperation, as well as with other paid staff.

Scope of Position:
This is a full-time position that will require the full-time devotion of the successful applicant. He should not engage in business enterprises which would take time that away from ministry. He should assume that the support of a devoted, faithful wife is understood. The wife will also be expected to take an active role in all church related activities as appropriate. Children should be disciplined as is fitting for children being reared in the "nurture and admonition of the Lord."

Qualifications:

  • Attention will be given to the candidate's educational background, especially in Bible and studies related to ministry. It is expected that he will continue to expend his knowledge through personal study and other opportunities.
  • He will be expected to have a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures and to teach out of a reliable translation. The majority of the congregation uses the KJV or NKJV. A few use the NIV.
  • It is expected that he have a good preaching style--such as will hold the attention of the audience and which will be persuasive for the truth.
  • It is expected that he will have personality and manners that will make favorable impressions in various social situations.
  • The applicant should be committed to personal evangelism and to be proficient in whatever method he has found to be most effective.
  • He should be prepared to use modern audio/visual and computer technology such as PowerPoint and various CD based scripture sources and to incorporate them into lessons as needed.

Experience and Personal Situation:
It is likely that we will seek a married man between the ages of thirty and fifty, though exceptions may be considered. It is expected that the applicant will reveal in advance any questionable situation in his personal life. This would include, but not be limited to, any previous marriage (himself or wife), unusual or chronic health problems in the family, legal problems, unusual financial problems, and any unusual situation with children.
We realize that congregations have not always been fair in the way they have dismissed preachers, but if the applicant has been asked to leave a church, we would expect this to be explained.
Resumé should include previous positions (with the expectation that these may be contacted). Other helpful information might include gospel meeting experience, lectureships, and publications. References are expected, but applicant should understand that persons not on his reference list might also be contacted.
Attention will be given to both the nature of prior experience as well as the years of experience.
By submitting application the applicant will be accepting that there will be a thorough background check.

Application:
Applicant should provide a resumé with cover letter. Be sure to indicate whether your present congregation is aware that you might be applying and whether you want your application to be held in confidence. A family photograph will be welcome. We also request two recorded sermons. Mail to: Elders, Church of Christ, 339 Charlotte Avenue, Rock Hill, SC 29730
